Writing Becomes Easier When You Have a Plan
After many years of working with high school students, we’ve come to realize that while many New Jersey schools are terrific, there are a few gaps in the curriculum that can hamper success in high school and impede college readiness.
One major gap is writing.
After fifth grade, very little formal writing instruction is included in the language arts curriculum.
The Writing Center at Breakaway Prep addresses this need by providing weekly writing sessions where students learn how to use language effectively and become strong and facile writers. The program includes development of diction and vocabulary, as well as mechanics and grammar. But the heart of the program focuses on the writing process and encompasses techniques of persuasive and expository writing. Sessions are taught by experienced and certified teachers of English.
Students will work on:
- Assessing Strengths and Weaknesses with Self-Critique
- Main Idea
- Finding a Thesis in the Conclusion
- Finding the Weaknesses in Your Thesis
- Making Transitions
- Eliminating Repetition
- Creating a Grammar Checklist
- Deconstructing the Assignment Question, and much more.
We offer an innovative 10-week program developed specifically for middle school students, as well as one-on-one sessions for high school students. For more information, email us at rickm@breakawayprep.com.
