    Early Start

    • The Early Start program helps students achieve successful transitions from middle school to high school and lays an academic and social foundation for a successful high school experience.
    • By the time they reach their junior and senior years, Early Start students will be exceptionally prepared to tackle the college search process.
    • The Early Start program helps students develop organizational skills and executive functioning, so they can get ahead of their academics and not fall behind.
    • For parents, the benefits of a self-directed child can help make the high school years easier, less anxious, and more focused on their child’s best interests.

Make the most of their high school years

Ninth and tenth grades can be difficult for young teens. With age comes greater responsibility and increased social pressures, and for many thoughts about college have barely begun to register. Early Start helps these students begin their high school careers on solid footing.

By providing individualized tutoring and academic support beginning in upper middle school, and by paying close attention to each students’ interests throughout their high school years, we help students and their parents prepare for college in a more thoughtful, well-planned, and personal way.

Early Start is the first step to finding the right college for the right reasons so students can flourish as productive, successful adults.

“I submitted my last application a few days ago and am done with my college applications! I wanted to thank you for reviewing what felt like an endless stream of essays. I found your input to be very valuable in my revision process.”

          Breakaway Writing

          One major gap is writing.

After fifth grade, very little formal writing instruction is included in the language arts curriculum.

The Writing Center at Breakaway Prep addresses this need by providing weekly writing sessions where students learn how to use language effectively and become strong and facile writers. The program includes development of diction and vocabulary, as well as mechanics and grammar. But the heart of the program focuses on the writing process and encompasses techniques of persuasive and expository writing. Sessions are taught by experienced and certified teachers of English.

          Students will work on:

          • Assessing Strengths and Weaknesses with Self-Critique
          • Main Idea
          • Finding a Thesis in the Conclusion
          • Finding the Weaknesses in Your Thesis
          • Making Transitions
          • Eliminating Repetition
          • Creating a Grammar Checklist
          • Deconstructing the Assignment Question, and much more.

We offer an innovative 10-week program developed specifically for middle school students, as well as one-on-one sessions for high school students. For more information, email us at rickm@breakawayprep.com.

            Test Preparation

            Preparation that’s better informed

College admissions exams are challenging: their standardized nature creates a gap between the design of the test and what students do in their regular academic lives.

Breakaway Prep’s test preparation curriculum is based on thousands of hours of one-on-one work with students just like your child. We know what works and what doesn’t, and we combine our strategies with ample practice opportunities on real exam materials.

To test or not to test? Breakaway Prep has you covered.

            • We help students prepare for college entrance tests, but we also help them explore more effective, momentum building processes that are taken with equal or greater weight by college admissions counselors.
            • The college admissions landscape has changed. If testing isn’t in the best interest of the student, our programs can lay the groundwork for acceptance to the college of their choice without the stress of unnecessary testing.
            • Breakaway Prep eliminates the fear of testing through repetition and practice: For as often or little as the student wishes to participate.
            • We offer full-length proctored practice tests every week; these help track progress and build endurance for the SAT and ACT®.

            Private Tutoring

All of our one-on-one students have the opportunity to work with two tutors, each of whom is devoted to particular phases of the test. Each tutor will work with you through our curriculum while getting to know you as a test-taker (and as a fantastic person with a bright future).

They will get to know your strengths and weaknesses, your test-taking habits, your greatest hopes and fears about the test, and will be able to constantly refine your approach. By test day, you will know the exam inside and out.

“We want to thank the whole Breakaway team for all the support with Matt. He’s the last one! We are so excited for him— he didn’t make it easy, but he did it!”
